God Is … Love

What is genuine love? What does it actually look like? The way the World is today it’s easy to become cynical and think that true love isn’t possible anymore.  Listen to what God says about Love, how to know it when you see it, and how to keep it!

Paul’s letter to the church of Corinth reminds us that what we’re chasing after may look like love, but in the end, it leads to disaster and can lead to disappointment. But, what it tells us is the kind of love we should be.

If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;[a] but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. – 1 Corinthians 13:1-7 (NLT)

13 Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NLT)

Three Possible Responses:

  • Shame
    • There is a difference between shame and conviction of the Holy Spirit.
      • Shame is when you internalize a feeling of unworthiness.
      • Conviction of the Holy Spirit is when God is helping you. God loves you way too much to leave you like this.
      • If you feel no love at all … that’s shame. If you feel love … that’s conviction of the Holy Spirit.
  • Doubt
    • God’s love is not unconditional, but there is no reason to doubt His great love.
  • Receiving & Reflecting
    • He wants you to let His love come into your heart so all you want is more of Him and less of the world.
    • When you do that His love will pour out of you.

Why are you in despair, O my soul?
And why are you disturbed within me?
Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him,
The help of my countenance and my God. – Psalm 43:5 (NASB)
