BEL AIR, Md. – The inaugural Battle for the Golden Ladle went down on Sunday, Jan. 14 and it wasn’t easy for the judges to pick a winner.
A total of eight entries competed in the first Engage Community Church chili cookoff and those entries provided the crowd with a wide variety of flavor, ranging from traditional “eatin'” chili with classic spices, ground beef and chili beans to a classic competition chili, featuring tender chunks of beef with a mildly-spiced “gravy”.
Two of the more intriguing entries were a thick and rich venison chili and a traditional chili made with a freshly smoked beef brisket.
But, in the end, it was Julia Nutter’s entry that took the top prize from the judges. The selection came as a bit of a shock to Nutter, who made that recipe for the first time ever for the competition.
